On May 25, 2010, the MHRA issued a Medical Device Alert for the DePuy Acetabular Cup to medical directors, orthopaedic surgeons, and their staff with the following action warning:
- Do not implant DePuy ASR hip replacements
- Return all unused ASR hip replacement implants to the manufacturer
- Inform all patients implanted with ASR hip replacements about recall and schedule them for follow up visit.
On August 27, 2010, Johnson and Johnson and its subsidiary, DePuy Orthopaedics issued a voluntary recall for the following devices:

- DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System
Some problems associated with these devices include pain, looseness, difficulty walking, failure of the device to bond, and pseudotumors. It is estimated that as many as 93,000 people may be impacted by this recall.
